It’s frustrating to see your Windows 10 computer booting up real slow down when you have to do something important on it. If you are suffering the same slow boot time problem on your PC/Laptop, this problem can occur due to various reasons. It can be corrupt system files, virus/malware on a computer, or Linux shell that can be enabled on a PC/Laptop.

Also, if you have unintentionally set too many apps to run at startup, that will cause the computer to experience slow motion. Some users may prefer to reset their Windows computer but I suggest you can try to fix the problem first. So, check out some of the ways to solve the problem I have put together in this guide.

1. Remove Apps from Startup

To avoid slow boot issues, depending on the startup effect, you can prevent a few applications from launching during PC/Laptop startup.

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to invoke the Task Manager
  • Click on the tab Startup
  • Right-click on column header Name
  • You can tick the options CPU at startup and Disk I/O at startup
  • Check which apps have a high or medium impact
  • Right-click on those programs, applications, and services
  • Select Disable

Note: you do not need to disable all apps and services. Just look for those like game clients, video streaming apps, music streaming apps, etc. A certain load as soon as the machine boots up causing a slow boot issue.

2. Try to Disable the Fast Startup Option

This service will normally load some animation just before your computer shuts down. It’s also enabled by default on your Windows 10 PC/Laptop.

  • Go to Settings> System
  • Next, go to Power and Sleep
  • Click on Additional Power Settings
  • Access power options
  • Under Shutdown settings, uncheck the radio button next to the option Turn on Startup

3. Disable Linux Shell on Windows to Fix Windows Slow Boot Times

  • In the search box on the desktop, you can type Windows features
  • Go to the menu turn window features on or off
  • Go to the Windows Subsystem for Linux
  • Uncheck the option
  • Restart your computer

4. Check for Corrupted System Files Using CMD

You can also run a check to make sure that corrupt system files are causing problems on your computer.

Use command information to perform an SFC scan.

  • Open Command Prompt
  • Give the command c:/sfc scannow
  • Press Enter
  • The system will detect corrupt files and repair them automatically

5. Is Your Computer Graphics Driver Updated?

When your graphic card not updating the driver can also cause bugs and slow boot issues on your computer.

  • In the search box type device manager
  • Go to the list of installed devices
  • Scroll to Display Adapter
  • You can right-click on the GPU installed on your computer
  • Select Update Driver
  • When you click on Search for Driver Updates automatically
  • The computer will download and install available graphics driving updates
  • Restart your computer after installing the updates

6. Disable Automatic Managing of Paging File Size

This option in Virtual memory settings allows the computer to manage paging file size. In some cases, having this option enabled causes a slow boot issue on Windows 10.

  • In the desktop search box, type Performance
  • Select Adjust Windows Appearance and Performance
  • Navigate to the Advanced tab
  • You can click change to edit the size of the paging file
  • Uncheck the check box to Automatically Manage paging file size
  • Select Custom Size
  • Next, set the Initial size and maximum size
  • Once you have done restart your computer and I am sure the slow boot issue will be fixed by now.

7. Reset Your PC to Fix Slow Boot Time Issue

If all of the above troubleshooting mentioned above do not work to fix the slow boot issue on your Windows 10, then try to reset your PC.

  • Just type a Reset in the search box of Windows 10
  • Reset this PC option from the search result
  • Click Open
  • Then click Get Started

Before resetting, make sure to take a backup of all non-native programs and services, documents that are saved on your hard drive. With a reset in effect, all files and folders will be swept clean and all content will be removed/uninstalled.
